Autumn 2020 Update

😊 Welcome ðŸ˜Š

Wow, what a year it's been so far .....  I hope you, your friends and family are safe, well and continue to be so.

Regular PhysioMyDog Facebook followers will see I post content to help dogs feel and move better.  But I appreciate not everyone is on social media, so thought I would start to do email updates a few times a year.  I will intentionally make these short and sweet, so you can contact me if you'd like further information.

This Issue focuses primarily on osteoarthritis in dogs ...... common things are common.  As I see it on a daily basis, it made sense to kick off with this topic.  Grab yourself a brew or something stronger and happy reading!

Please get in touch with any queries or questions.  As always, I can’t wait to hear from you!

Earlier this year the The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) announced the results of the world's largest elbow disease study to help owners.

What did it say?

  • Most common types of elbow joint disease are arthritis, followed by elbow dysplasia (which results in arthritis).

  • The following breeds are more at risk compared to cross breeds, Rottweiler (x6 risk), Labrador Retriever (x6 risk), German Shepherd Dog (x4 risk), Golden Retriever (x3 risk) and English Springer Spaniel (x2 risk).

  • Most common signs reported by owners were lameness, difficulty exercising and pain.

"The results have highlighted which breeds are most at risk in order to assist owners to be alert for the signs of this condition and to seek veterinary treatment early." RVC

You can read the whole study here. https://bit.ly/32vcPbs

What does this mean?

  • Arthritis cannot be cured but it CAN be managed.

  • Keep an eye on your dog - watch how they are moving and behaving.

  • The sooner your dog gets help, the less pain they will be in. And not everything has to cost money.

  • By looking at your dog's overall lifestyle (ie weight, exercise, home environment etc) and working as a team - owners, vets, therapists - it can help ensure your dog is not suffering in silence.

  • Left untreated it hurts .... and no owner wants their dogs to be in pain.

PhysioMyDog Research

  • I've personally seen dogs with elbow arthritis benefit from physiotherapy.

  • Their mobility and wellbeing improving by up to 30%.

  • You can read about that here.

Supplement Feature - CBD

I get asked frequently about the best supplements for dogs.  Legally I am unable to provide specific nutritional advice (you'd need to discuss with your vet) but I am happy to provide further reading for you.

I often get asked about CBD.  Canine Arthritis Management have recently put together this useful owner's guide.
